Maybe there were/would've been efforts to can it for being too controversial kinda like with the whole Six Days in Fallujah thing but that was a small team caving whereas here it's a juggernaut dev/publisher.Īlthough they likely could just do it if they wanted this is still a generally risk-adverse mainstream company though, if they at some point figured having such content would cause a 10% drop in revenue or something that may have been a factor in Patriot's cancellation. Hell GTA still gets flak and still makes a killing. There was bound to be some level of controversy but if they really wanted to do it they probably could've, it's not like Spec Ops got automatically banned for having you shoot American shooters. In general though I doubt we're gonna get anything particularly confronting from a major dev any time soon, especially as they deviate away from story-driven games and move even more over to the whole always online 'live service' thing. I guess we won't ever know, I'm just happy that Siege eventually turned out pretty good. Maybe Patriots could've been really good, though judging by the story here if it just wasn't working out and was deemed a dead end short of being revamped into something quite different that does seem unlikely. It could've been like Homefront, going on about how it's gonna be a deep take on these kind of untouched disturbing themes then falling on its arse. Doing decent story in-game is hard, when it centres around complex issues harder still.

It could've been a genuinely nuanced and thought provoking look into difficult concepts that haven't really been seen in games, or a shallow cringefest full of shock moments for the sake of it like an entire game trying to be No Russian from MW2. It's a great premise but that's just an idea and one that would've been a tricky to do justice.
